Bats
Sixteen of the nineteen bat species found in Canada occur in the Okanagan. Bats provide a valuable service eating flying insects. In the winter, some bat species survive in caves or hollow trees while others migrate to warmer countries. If you would like to attract bats by building a bat house visit the Bat Conservation International website and check the “Get Involved” tab.
If you have unwanted bats in your attic or storage sheds, inspect all structures for holes and cracks and repair or cover up. If think you have a maternal colony of females and young bats, wait until winter to seal the entry points. For further information on managing bats go to this BC Ministry of Environment website.
